The foundations of
Atakule which is one the most important modern structures and the first shopping center of
Ankara, designed by
Ragıp Buluç were layed in 1986. The construction was completed after three years and the building was put into use in 1989. The building consists of two sections . The first section is the shopping center and the second is the 125 m high tower.
Atatürk Shopping center is famous for having the first glass vault and transparent lift of
Ankara. The center won the “
National Architecture Award” in 1990 . This complex stands right in the middle of
Çankaya which is one of the highest places in
Ankara. There are 86 shops in the shopping center. Some of these provide service in clothing, some in food and the rest in various sectors. There is also a play center for children. There is a three storey car park under the building. The shopping center was rendered popular through several concerts given there. The movie comprising several lounges attracts interest. There is also a wedding lounge inside the shopping center. Here small meetings except weddings are organized as well. The second section is the tower which provides a bird’s eye view over
Ankara. From the balcony on the top of the tower the entire scenery of
Ankara can be viewed. There is also a restaurant here.
