When İstanbul was besieged by
Yıldırım Bayezid in the year 1393, a castle was erected on the
Anatolian part of the city. It is known that
Ottoman pashas and governors were living around the castle in the 18th and 19th centuries. The glorious pavilions where these people lived were lined up at the asian coast of the
Bosphorus. On the other hand it is known that during his conquest of
İstanbul,
Fatih Sultan Mehmet had built another castle on the european part of the city. The castle which is known as
Rumelihisarı today and which was built in 1452 comprises 3 main towers and walls standing between them. The purpose of having this castle built was to protect
İstanbul against attacks that might come from over the
Black Sea and the
Danube River. In the
Castle of
Rumeli which was restored in the year 1953 for the 500th anniversary of
İstanbul’s conquest shows and concerts are organized during summer.
