ŞANLIURFA Harran Houses

Harran is located 44 km southeast of Şanlıurfa. The historical city of Harran visited by thousands of turkish and foreign tourists is established on the center of the plain called Harran as well. It is said that the place mentioned as Hârân in the Torah is this place. The İslam historians relate the foundation of the city to Kaynan who is one of the grandchildren of Noah or to Aran (Haran) , brother of Abraham . İbn Seddad, a 13th century historian wrote that Abraham, before moving to Palestine lived in this city. Therefore it is said that Harran is called the city of Abraham, that there is a house and a small mosque belonging to Abraham and a stone where he leaned while seated. What makes Harran very interesting in the opinion of the tourists are the conical houses . Whenever mention is made about Harran, the first thing one recalls is these houses. The interesting architectural tissue of the Harran Houses is uniqe and cannot be seen anywhere else in the world. These houses which were built by the villagers using the bricks collected from the antique architectural remnants of the ruins of Harran comprise a conical dome covering a square formed area. The individual domes standing next to each other are connected to each other with archs from the inside and thus a rather wide living area was obtianed. The houses which are congruent with the climate of the region are cool in summer and warm in winter. People in the region say that chicken lay more eggs, some animals such as the horses are much more quiet, dry onions sprout faster and that food remains longer without becoming rotten in these houses.
