ANTALYA Kesik Mosque

The mosque, Seljuk Period piece of art was previously constructed as Panagelia Church in the name of Virgin mary by Byzantines in the 5th century AD and turned into a mosque by Şehzade Korkut , son of Beyazıt II ( 13th century AD) and a minaret was added to the building. For this reason it is also known as Korkut Mosque or Camii Kebir. The rather plain niche that was constructed during the conversion of the church into a mosque is made of cut stone. The mosque was renamed as Kesik Minaret as it was destructed after a fire in 1851. In the year 1974 the façade and the entrance area were restored. The mosque is surrounded with debris and walls and iron fences. The building has a rectangular layout stretching east and westwards. On the western side of the building additions made later are clearly seen. Presently the mosque is not used. However it still serves as a unique remnant presenting the visitors the Antique Byzantine and Seljuk construction elements.
