Mevlana Mausoleum which is one of the most important historical and touristic places of
Konya was built in the year 1274. The
mausoleum and the dervish convent were built in
Seljuk and
Ottoman style. It is known that during the
Seljuk period this place was used as a
Hasbahçe. The dome of the
mausoleum which is 25 m high was built during the
Karamanoğulları Beyliği period. The construction of this building which remained upto the present day as one of the most important reflections of the
Seljuk architecture continued until the 19th century. Throughout the years the mausoleum has always been the centre of interest. The reason of this interest is that the eminent
Turkish Sufi and
poet Mevlana Celaleddin-i Rumi who has always been highly esteemed for more than 700 years and whose works have been translated into almost all languages lies here. The most important known work of
Mevlana is
MESNEVİ.
Mevlana who cites nice stories and advices in his works is worldwide known. The beauty of the mausoleum does not come from its architectural characteristics only.
Examples of carpets,
rugs,
fabrics of Seljuk style , very valuable works of the
Mevlevi Art, reed flutes and kudums are displayed in the
mausoleum which was turned into a
museum. The
mausoleum of
Mevlana was opened to public in 1927 as a
museum. Objects from the convent time belonging to
Mevlana, works about
Mevlevi Philosophy,
Mevlevi music instruments,
calligraphy, examples of fabrics and carpets are displayed in the
museum. According to the official records in 1993 the
museum was visited by 1.200.000 people. The floor arrangement of the museum was done on 10 December 1993 as per a resolution adapted by the Board of Monuments.
