Mount Ağrı which is the highest mountain in
Turkey has many different names such as
Ararat,
Kuh-i Nuh and
Cebel ül Haris. It comprises the
Great Mount Ağrı , 5165 meters and the
Little Mount Ağrı, 3896 meters.
Great Mount Ağrı is the highest mountain of not only
Turkey, but of the
Anatolian Peninsula and of
Europe as well. The summit of the mountain is covered by glaciers. At the altitude of 4000 m snowfalls start and the vegetation continues up to that altitude. There are many legends about this mountain coming from the past . One of these says that the Noah’s Ark rests here upon which
Frederic Parot realized the first ascent to
Ağrı in 1829. Today people dealing with mountaineering climb
Mount Ağrı at certain times of the year in the summer and in winter.Transportation is provided by road from
İstanbul and
Ankara as well as by air. In other words the nearest settlement to the “
Highest point of Turkey” is
Doğubeyazıt. Here there are hotels and pensions offering accomodation to domestic and foreign tourists.
